Summer Fun in New York City

June 21st was the first day of summer and the weather didn’t hesitate to reach into the 80s. New York City is one of the most exciting summer spots in the entire United States. With its endless iconic sightseeing spots that still thrill old New Yorkers and tourists alike and its unique five boroughs, summer fun is going to be easy to find in NYC. We have compiled a few suggestions on how to best enjoy the daytime sun, all the fun, and the warm Big Apple nightlife this summer season.

Summer Stage

For the N.Y.C. concert lovers out there, the long string of summer music events at Summer Stage is a great activity choice at Rumsey Playfield. Continuing on through July 7th to Sept 22nd, there are numerous free events scheduled for the public’s enjoyment. Line-ups are as diverse as New York City itself, offering everything from Jazz, to dance music parties, to folk and cultural acts.

Summer Streets

During August 5, 12, and 19th, from the hours of 7 am to 1 pm; seven miles of New York City streets are going to be opened up to the public. This free event allows Summer Streets patrons the freedom to enjoy biking, running, or just a long and pleasant walk in an enjoyable and safe open space in the heart of the city with no annoying traffic to get in the way.

The annual NYC celebration aims to promote healthy recreational activities while also highlighting the benefits of utilizing public transit in order to get to the event, which expects a return this year of over 300,000 participants. Summer Streets expands from the Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park, through to Park Avenue and its connecting streets.

A Day on Governor’s Island

Governor’s Island is the 172-acre island park situated in the New York Harbor just around 800 yards off of the southern tip of Manhattan Island. No cars are allowed on the island which gives visitors a comfortable free reign of the open park space that houses 52 historic buildings, free arts and cultural events, and also ongoing recreational activities.

Access to the island is by ferry, which operates daily from Manhattan Island and Brooklyn. Round trip tickets are cheap at $2.00, $1 for seniors. Children under 13 years of age ride free.
